“Street Scenes Collection” was inspired by the works of Paul Cezanne, Ernst Kirchner, and from the Harlem Renaissance of the early 20th century. Each artist or movement represented change from classical to modernism during the 1890s through the 1920s in Europe and North America. The paintings draw the viewer into glimpses of historical landmarks and of community events that have continued for generations. I combined memories of my own childhood, photographs of my paternal grandparents, and research from African-American history in Jacksonville during the early 20th century into the paintings. This was my way of showing others that some of those times were not always what has been depicted in earlier school history books or on television.
